OTTAWA, January 18, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- AstraZeneca Canada Inc. said it will spend $100 million in its Canadian division to develop a new heartburn drug that would be one of the world's best-selling medications and the best-selling heartburn pill -- and to develop a new painkiller called Nexium, the first of its kind.
It also will spend $300 million to develop a new painkiller called Nexium, the first of its kind, for the treatment of GERD and other gastrointestinal ailments.
The company, which was founded by former British drug maker AstraZeneca Canada Inc. in 2003, said it is reviewing the development of its Nexium product and that Nexium has received final approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April.
The Nexium company has agreed to buy the drug, which is being marketed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), for $2.4 billion, more than twice its current market value.
GSK, a British company that has developed and marketed the drugs, announced its intent to buy the drug in Canada, but said it will pay a total of $500 million upfront and will release the product in Canada only at the end of the year.
GSK will also make a profit of $300 million. The company is not disclosing what percentage of the upfront and full-year profit will be spent on the new Nexium product.
The Canadian company said it will have no objection to the development of the new drug for its Canadian customers.
Patients who are suffering from heartburn, acid reflux or stomach ulcers should take Nexium as soon as possible after the end of the treatment's 14-day course of treatment and consult a doctor. Nexium, a painkiller used to treat acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can cause ulcers and bleeding. Nexium works by killing or preventing acid production in the stomach.
The company also said it will continue to fund research and development to identify new medications, including one for the treatment of heartburn and GERD, which is also known as "Nexus".
The Canadian company said its research and development costs will be reimbursed by the government. The company is also reviewing a patent protection agreement with the US-based firm that will allow the company to license Nexium from AstraZeneca Canada, which is a subsidiary of AstraZeneca.
The Nexium company has signed an agreement with AstraZeneca to conduct clinical studies to determine the safety and efficacy of Nexium for people with GERD and other gastrointestinal ailments.
The company said that, while the drug is not intended to cure acid reflux, it will reduce the risk of ulcers and bleeding.
Nexium is available in the U. under the brand name Zantac and is marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. AstraZeneca Canada Inc. also plans to launch its own product in Canada as well.
The Nexium company said that, while the drug may be available in the U. only with a prescription from a health care professional, the company will be able to provide the full range of the product.
Dr. John Smith, the chief medical officer at GlaxoSmithKline said: "We are excited to be developing a new painkiller for people with GERD and other gastrointestinal ailments."
